ChalleNGe – Arts Partnership Lab 2021. Thurs 14 October 2021
ChalleNGe is Nottingham’s Local Cultural Education Partnership (LCEP). The ‘Arts Partnership Lab’ in October is our annual opportunity to bring together arts partners, community representatives, education providers and funders to celebrate past projects, share lessons learnt and explore potential collaborations to inspire future activities as a partnership.
Following the afternoon zoom session, Connecting Notts hosted an evening discussion at Antenna (Beck St), where we launched the ‘We are Here‘ short film by Ben Harriott, made with support from Base 51, New Art Exchange and Helping Kids Achieve.
We hope the film will provoke conversations around how we listen to young people in Nottingham, and how we can work together to respond to their views on creative opportunities in the city.
Walk the Talk, Silence in not an option. Fri 15 October 2021
Walk The Talk – Silence Is Not An Option was a walk through Nottingham City Centre as part of National Hate crime Awareness week. The walk began at the Brian Clough Statue, Old Market Square in the City Centre, and we stopped at various locations on the way to hear spoken word artists and poets, before reaching the National Justice Museum and seeing the premiere of a collaborative community film all around what it means to be actively anti-racist and how we can all contribute towards change and action.
Written and performed by spoken word artists, Mr.Shay and JayaHadADream, the film is part of an ongoing project led by New Art Exchange and Communities Inc. Thank you to Jayahadadream, Jay Sandhu, Cara Thompson, and Parmjit Sagoo for creating such a powerful and memorable performance.
Walk the Talk events are themed community walks, exploring social issues whilst walking through urban and natural landscapes across Nottingham. A partnership between Communities Inc, New Art Exchange and National Justice Museum and supported by the Freelands Foundation.
Nottingham Queer Art Collective, Wed 27 October 2021
Nottingham’s Queer Art Collective has officially been launched! Their mission is to bring together LGBTQ+ artists of all disciplines from in and around Nottingham to appreciate, liberate, and support our community and art.
Meeting at Nottingham Playhouse, members of the Queer Art Collective will have access to:
– Monthly meetings, on the last Wednesday of every month.
– Rehearsal space at Nottingham Playhouse, to support their own practice and existing projects.
– The Supportive Network of artists and venues they build together, and what they can offer each other, from new to established.
If you are aged 18 years old or over and have an interest in the arts/an artform, and genuinely identify as LGBT+ (or questioning), then definitely keep an eye an out for future events!
How to build your own business and support your own art

This Q&A was facilitated by freelance performer and performance maker Octavia Nyombi, who creates within her queer feminist theatre company Category: Peach and represents Nottingham Playhouse within ‘Connecting Notts’.
Panel members included:
– Freelance Director and Creative Producer Hannah Stone, a leader in creating female-led work.
– Former Programme and Events Manager of ‘The Big House’ business support programme, and current CEO of the Creative Quarter, Tamily Cookson.
– And Freelance Designer Katy Goodwin, representing herself and Freedom Foundation, who offers us a perspective from an NTU graduate diving into the arts and working as self employed.
Social Enterprise session with Laura Grant
This event was an interactive session to gain more understanding of what a social enterprise can achieve and how you can turn your passion for social change into a business.
Laura Grant, co-director of Freedom Foundation and co-founder of the TIRED movement shared her personal and professional journey of developing a successful social enterprise and how her passion for children’s mental health and the creative arts has enabled her to build her current career.
Screening Night: Buffering presents ‘The Smog of the Sea‘
BACKLIT’s Pending Collective presented ‘The Smog of the Sea’ (2017). The Smog of the Sea chronicles a 1-week journey through the remote waters of the Sargasso Sea. Marine scientist Marcus Eriksen invited onboard an unusual crew to help him study the sea: renowned surfers Keith & Dan Malloy, musician Jack Johnson, spearfisher woman Kimi Werner, and bodysurfer Mark Cunningham become citizen scientists on a mission to assess the fate of plastics in the world’s oceans.
This event included a showcase of the short film and the opportunity of a discussion afterwards.
Fundraising Event with Nick Lawford
Nick Lawford has been working in fundraising for over 15 years. In this practical workshop, Nick explored how to apply for funding for youth, community and arts projects, as well as organisational support. This included Arts Council England, National Lottery funding, charitable trusts and foundations, corporate sponsorship, crowd-funding and individual giving.

Wellbeing, Mental Health and the Arts

Jaya Gordon-Moore (also known as JayaHadADream) has been a founding member of Connecting Notts since Sept 2020. Jaya and Jay Sandhu both performed at this event, held at Antenna, and led discussions and workshops about how creativity helps with our mental wellbeing. This discussion involved Jaya sharing her lived experiences in the community organisation realm and what inspired her to concentrate on creative opportunities.
