Being self-employed, Co-creating, Fundraising, Participation, Performance, Playwriting, Producing, Theatre

Ey up! I'm Participation Director with New Perspectives Theatre Company. I lead the talent development programme New Associates and community arts initiative Open Pitch. Both opportunities are for East Mids artists aged 18+ but we're happy to also discuss routes in with anyone aged 16+.

I’m from a working class background, didn’t go to University, worked freelance for 25 years (I’m ancient) so I have a shed load of experience of being self employed and navigating your own career path within the Creative Industries. I write plays (and books and other stuff but mostly things that are made for live performance) I can discuss ways to create your own work by finding your team, applying for funding, project managing, figuring out the where, why, how and who for. Anything theatre flavoured really.

New Perspectives is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary as a company and the team has over 100 years of collective experience so we can share insights and expertise learnt by doing and making mistakes and doing it again.

When I first started out, I wish I’d have known that you don’t need to wait for permission to be let in, you can start your own thing and set your own rules. Young People can find support in each other, find your people. If you can’t see it, then you need to be it, so others can. Knock on some doors like your local theatre and ask how you can work together.

New Associates is a year-long talent development programme for East Midlands artists. Writers, actors, producers, directors, makers become part of a support network receiving free workshops from industry professionals, space to share ideas and scripts, help with applying for funding to develop and tour theatre productions, sharing of industry news and opportunities, tickets to shows…etc

Happy to have one-to-one tel calls or online meetings; be a speaker or panel member at Connecting Notts events, a Speaker or visitor in Secondary Schools, run workshops.
