Take Part in a Nottingham Social Experiment – Short Film
We’re inviting people from across Nottingham to take part in a friendly social experiment we’re filming soon, and we’d love you to be involved. We are looking for 150 such Nottingham based individulas.
The project focuses on community, social issues, and individual lived experiences. At its heart, it’s about empathy and kindness. The video is supported by Nottingham City Council, with our venue partner Nottingham Contemporary.
What taking part looks like:
• Short, guided actions on camera
• You’re in control of what you share and can stop at any time
• No scripts, no acting, no right or wrong answers
• Camera angles won’t focus on one person in particular, but the entire audience as a whole.
• Food and Refreshments will be provided ( After the end of the filming)
Who we’re looking for:
People from all walks of life. Different ages, backgrounds, identities, and experiences. You don’t need media experience. Just honesty and openness.
One small but important ask: come as you.
If you have a uniform, a look, or clothing that says something about who you are or what you do, we’d love you to wear it. That might be a work uniform, a biking outfit, a goth look, drag, sports kit, religious dress, or something else entirely. If not, that’s absolutely fine too. There’s no pressure. This is about being visible, not being labelled.
Please dress in fairly plain clothes where appropriate. Complex patterns and close lines, such as pinstripes can interfere with camera sensors and create artefacts.
The aim is to capture real reactions and raw emotion, not rehearsed responses.
We won’t be sharing every detail beforehand, simply because we want the moments we capture to be real and unfiltered. You’ll be fully briefed on the day, can ask questions at any point, and can step away whenever you choose.

Step into the Shadows
Friday 23 January, 10am-12pm, free
National Justice Museum
Explore, Reflect, Create: Mark-Making in the Cells. Step into the shadows. Step into the stories. Step into the cells of the National Justice Museum, a place where echoes of the past still speak.
In this workshop, you’ll begin your journey in the museum’s historic Georgian and Victorian cells, spaces once used to hold those awaiting justice. As you move through these powerful environments, you’ll be invited to look closely, feel deeply, and respond creatively using graphite, soft pastels, and light sources to capture your impressions through mark-making. These first marks are raw, instinctive, and personal, a creative response to a space full of history, tension, and emotion.
Then, in our welcoming workshop space, you’ll come together with others to share reflections, discuss your creative choices, and explore how your marks connect with wider themes: power, punishment, resistance, justice, and humanity. You’ll choose one drawing to develop further using waterbased colour, guided by a Visual artist Ismail Khokon.

Black cap to Tombstones
Friday 30 January, 10am-12pm, free
National Justice Museum
Taking inspiration from National Justice Museum objects in the collection, I have planned a painting and drawing workshop based on the Black Cap, one of the objects representing justice in Tudor times.
I have taken this idea further by applying it to different headgear in different cultures. Headgear carries a symbolic meaning which carries spiritual significance for different communities. In the ‘Make it Yours’ session, we will be learning Acrylic painting techniques and producing paintings on canvas.
Working from the photographs, participants will portray different headgear which will carry spiritual meanings as well as cultural relevance.
In this session, we will be learning Acrylic painting techniques from beginners to advanced level, covering all ability levels and adapting to the needs of participants at an individual level.

Portraits of Escape: Women Surrealists and the Art of Collage
Friday 13 March, 10am-12pm, free
National Justice Museum
This workshop introduces participants to female Surrealists – Leonora Carrington, Dorothea Tanning, Claude Cahun – and to Hannah Höch’s influential photomontage. Together, we will consider how Surrealism and collage have acted as survival strategies, enabling artists to imagine freedom when constrained by circumstance, gender roles, political oppression, or, in this context, incarceration.
Participants will spend time with the museum’s 30 Objects Representing Justice portraits as a point of departure for thinking about identity and representation. Drawing on the atmosphere of the National Justice Museum’s historic spaces, we will create surreal or speculative collage portraits exploring escape, longing, dream worlds, and symbolic transformation.

The Worn Self
Friday 20 February, 10am-12pm, free
National Justice Museum
Working with artist Michelle Reader, you’ll design a badge or personal adornment made from found and recyclable materials – something that can shift or adjust to reflect your current state of being and express something about your inner world.
Good-conduct badges, such as the one in our 30 Objects Representing Justice exhibition, were introduced by prison reformer Elizabeth Fry to reward good behaviour during a prison sentence. Inspired by this and other forms of insignia – from the skills badges earned in the scouting movement to the patches and markers that signal our favourite causes and communities – this workshop reimagines the badge as a living marker of selfhood.
Through simple sculptural techniques, we’ll select and transform discarded fragments to create playful, thoughtful symbols. Each participant will leave with a unique, personal emblem: a small work of art assembled from fragments of story and self.

Learn about colour theory, colour mixing and how to use colour palettes to make your artworks come alive.
This workshop is inspired by Andy Warhol’s use of colour but will also look at other artists work and give you time to experiment with a range of materials.
All levels of experience welcome.

Shine
9th – 20th February 2026
Shine is Nottingham Playhouse’s flagship participation programme, working with community partners across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire to provide free theatre sessions for young people aged 4-25.
Led by expert theatre practitioners, we deliver bespoke workshops for participants, invite participants to watch up to two Nottingham Playhouse productions each year and offer opportunities to perform both in their community and the Nottingham Playhouse mainstage, all absolutely free for those taking part.
Current projects are running in Aspley, Beechdale and Bilborough, Carrington and The Meadows.
